As energy markets across Southeast Asia adapt to the rise of renewables, battery storage has become a central business solution. On BFM 89.9’s Morning Brief, SynVista Energy’s Executive Director Peter Phang sat down with Roshan Kanesan to explore the company’s approach to scaling battery energy storage across Southeast Asia — and why Malaysia plays a key role in their strategy.

Battery Storage: A Growing Business in a Shifting Energy Market

SynVista’s core product, the AI-powered Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), is designed to address one of the most pressing challenges in energy today: managing supply and demand as renewable energy scales up.

Phang explained that SynVista’s BESS function much like giant power banks. Their real value, however, lies in how they help clients—ranging from utilities to commercial users and government agencies—lower energy costs, enhance reliability, and make more efficient use of renewable energy.

With smart algorithms, SynVista’s BESS can optimize energy flows in real time, turning battery energy storage into a business asset for managing operational efficiency.

Why Malaysia Matters in SynVista’s Regional Strategy

Phang explained SynVista’s decision to choose Malaysia as its strategic base, citing key factors like its infrastructure readiness, available talent, reliable legal system, and regional accessibility.

Phang noted that SynVista views Malaysia not merely as a manufacturing location but, more importantly, as a strategic hub within its broader ASEAN expansion. Its strong connectivity, supportive business ecosystem, and proactive government policies made it a logical choice for growing the company’s battery energy storage operations in the region.

Building Local Capabilities and Long-Term Value

In the interview, Phang also outlined SynVista’s plans to establish a Center of Excellence in Malaysia, which will serve as a key platform for advancing the company’s long-term goals in the region. The center will support local talent training, technical knowledge transfer, and collaborative efforts with universities and industry partners to strengthen Malaysia’s clean energy ecosystem.

The Business Case for Battery Energy Storage in ASEAN

As ASEAN countries race to meet renewable energy targets, the demand for scalable, cost-effective battery storage solutions continues to rise. Phang outlined several drivers fueling this growth:

  • Increasing volatility in electricity pricing
  • Utility-scale solar and wind projects requiring grid support
  • Corporate energy users seeking greater control over energy use

Battery storage has evolved beyond being a niche technology; it is now, increasingly, a commercial necessity for managing energy risk—particularly in the rapidly growing markets of Southeast Asia.
